I might need to rename my blog. Is “I’m Addicted to Potatoes and I Just Can’t Help Myself” taken? Because if you glance at my past posts real quick, you’ll see I have a problem.
The funny thing is, I really don’t eat potatoes that often. I swear! And I’m a pretty healthy eater, so I typically try not to gorge on french fries, but you have to give yourself a treat every now-and-again, or you’ll binge (trust me. I’ve been there).
Clearly, when I treat myself, I do it right. With french fries smothered in deliciousness. I mean, if you’re gonna go for it, forget the standard ketchup routine. Try one of these deluxe french fry plates instead:
Animal Style Fries (shown above): If you live in California, or have ever been to California, you know the craze that is In-and-Out. Now, I’ve never been a fan of their burgers…even pre-vegan. I think they are highly overrated, and when my out-of-town guests act as though they hung the stars I want to scream a little bit. However, I have to give credit where credit is due, and they do one thing really, really well: French fries. Served Animal Style, they add grilled onions, cheese and thousand island dressing and holycowisitamazing. So how hard could it be to veganize that, you ask? Well, not hard at all! Just caramelize some onions on the stove in a little bit of olive oil (until they get brown), and then serve topping your favorite fries. Add some Daiya (cheddar would be more on-pointe with the original, I opted for mozzarella), and stick in the microwave about 30 seconds to melt a bit. Top with vegan thousand island dressing. Follow Your Heart makes a terrific version, or you can make your own.
Vegan Poutine: Or, if you live in Southern California, Gravy Fries. In fact, for a long time I didn’t know that my favorite mall food was the beloved delicacy of an entire country. Enter Boyfriend. The Canadian. Now poutine is the requested food on birthdays and for special dinners. And I happily oblige. Because it’s amazing. Simple enough to make, just throw a little Daiya on your fries (again, either kind, we go for the mozzarella) and your favorite vegan gravy. We opt for a packet of brown gravy (found in the natural food sections), or Imagine’s Mushroom Gravy. You can also make your own mushroom gravy pretty easily. Boyfriend tops his with ketchup (?!?!), which I’m assuming is something he picked up back home.
Pizza Fries: I went to High School in Tucson, Arizona, home of the world’s best sandwich chain, Eegee’s. Among the food that they served that I used to be addicted to, was a dish called “Pizza Fries.” Whoooaaa, right? How genius is that? And easy. Fries. Cheese. Pizza Sauce. Enjoy.
Chili Cheese Fries: Obvs, right? Vegetarian canned chili can be found in any grocery store, and you can make a killer cheese sauce if you want the gooey fries, by melting a couple of handfuls of cheddar Daiya in about a cup of almond milk on the stove.
Nacho Fries: It’s as though heaven and…uh…heaven have joined forces. French fries topped with black beans, that same cheese sauce, vegan sour cream, and jalapeños. I mean, who needs chips, right? That’s just silly.
Sweet Potato fries with Chipotle Aioli: There is something about the sweet potato that goes perfectly with chipotles. Though, I am a big fan of anything with both sweet potatoes or chipotles, so there is that. But pair them, and you have a combo to die for. To make the aioli, follow this recipe.
I’ve probably done enough damage here. Let me know if you have another fry combo I’m missing out on. I’m more than willing to be a test subject on this one.
